Next Powerball - $1.3 Billion? Who's in?

Believe it or not, craps is not the only game in the casino. Savvy players have a back-up plan for when their craps game is off. If Heavy isn't winning at Craps you're likely to find him playing Baccarat, Blackjack, or even Roulette. If the table games aren't working out he may even take a cigar break in the high limit slot area for a little hit-and-run action. But just like craps - you have to plan your play and play your plan. If you have a question on slots, video poker, carnival games or any table games other than craps, this is the place to post. Let's hear about the games you play when you're not playing craps! What's your game? What's your strategy? How's that working out for you? Inquiring minds want to know!

Next Powerball - $1.3 Billion? Who's in?

Post by heavy » Sun Jan 10, 2016 11:54 am

Yeah, I'll admit it. When the jackpot hit $900 million yesterday I caved and spent $10 on the old Powerball lottery. And that's exactly how I looked at it - "spent." It was an "entertainment" bet. Yep, I had as good of a shot at the $$$ as anyone - but nobody won. They say the next drawing will be for around $1.3 Billion. That's a number that's really unfathomable to me. That's one thousand three hundred million dollars. Let's say you're like yours truly and are in your late sixties. Best case scenario I have maybe twenty years left to spend it. As my buddy SIA likes to say, "If I die with a dime left I planned wrong." So what would I do with $1.3 Billion.

Obviously I'm going to take the "cash" option instead of the annuity. They shave about 40% off the top for that so you'd be sitting at around $800 million cash. Then there's the tax vig. The top marginal tax rate (Federal) is just shy of 40%. So there goes another $300 million or so. Since I live in Texas there's no state income tax. SMILE. That leaves us at around a half-billion dollars in the kitty.

Worry worry worry. What to do with $500 million. Invest it and get a 5% return and you'd have an income stream of $2.5 million a year without depleting the investment. Take $38K a month or so? Sure, why not.

Now what? Go on. Dream a bit. Let's hear how you'd handle your net $500 million. And don't give me the answer the guy in Vegas gave on national TV the other night . . . "I'd blow it all on cocaine and prostitutes."

Hmmm,

My calculator says 5% of $500 million is $25,000,000 a year.

Even my wife couldn't spend that much...I think?

First thing i'm getting is a jet of some kind and a couple pilots.

After that I will play it by ear as to the management of the rest.

I'd take a trip around Atlanta and leave money for people..anonymous money. Guy works at Kroger who gives me good American lamb chops and we talk casino stuff..I'd lay twenty K on him just for being who he is..and some other employees around who I kid around with. I would set up a deal with a market to pay for everybody's food for a day..or a week. I love to watch people get something good. And I'd get a new car 'cause the 1997 Honda still goes, but somebody with a grand could have it. Mainly I'd put it away..invest it wisely and live off the interest..and probably go to the south of France and buy a
place ..or an apartment in Paris. There's a million or two right there out the door!

Damn decimal points getting in the way all the time.

For $100 million or so I might buy my own cruise ship and invite a couple of thousand of my closest craps pals to sail the seas with me for a few months out of the year. Of course, I'd do some retro-fitting to devote more floor space to a casino operation and I'd be the "house." LOL.

I'm thinking it will be at least $1.6B, but $2B is not out of the question.

We dropped $40 on it yesterday as an entertainment bet, as Heavy termed it. We'll probably do something similar again on Wednesday.

After helping out our immediate family members with their debt and setting up some trusts for the kids and grandchild the wife and I have always talked about moving west and buying some land to operate an animal rescue shelter. A second property in the Caribbean sounds nice too :)

We actually just adopted a new rescue yesterday. We focus on the seniors to give them a good home for their remaining days. His name is Capone. He's an English Mastiff, somewhere around 7-9 years old. We have three Mastiffs in the house now with our new addition.

Capone looks like a sweetie! Excellent! :D

Now, how to spend millions.

Family first.
Condo in Vegas
Larger Craps bankroll but not obscenely large.
All my friends still in medical research would get a boost in their funding
Children in USA and Mexico who are deserving but economically unable would get money for their educations.
More world travel for me and my husband.
Money for 22inside's animal rescue projects.

I admit it, I broke my piggy bank to buy a $2 ticket. Imagine my frustration when I found out I didn't win!

Wow. With three mastiffs, I hope you have a John Deere to clean up the backyard. Beautiful dog BTW.

I'd have to give the vast majority away to family and friends and hope what is left doesn't kill me too fast.

TBH I seriously wouldn't want 500 million or whatever the net is. 5 million would be ok.

Thanks Bankerdude. They do generate a lot of fertilizer. We had 4 up until last year, but two of them passed away at various times. Four was definitely too many of these large beasts, but unforeseen circumstances put us in a situation where we needed to take a couple extra for a few years.

Use the multiplier option.

Greetings 221nside,

The multiplier option is for THE small prices.
ex- if you win $100 dollars, and the multiplier is 3x, you win $300 dollars. 3 times 100.

Good try 221nside. Jaime.

Any one of them could have won if they were in cahoots with Eddie Tipton or they bought enough tickets with the same 5 numbers and then cover all the powerball numbers.

I rarely buy lottery tickets but I did buy 10 last Saturday. I always pick my own numbers and I used the same 5 numbers with 10 different powerball numbers.

If you haven't heard of Eddie Tipton, look up "Eddie Tipton hot lotto"

CET would probably be happy to sell you one of their properties and you could name it "Heavies" LOL

I would love to own a small casino - perhaps one of the downtown Vegas properties - which we'd name Heavy's Perfect World Casino. In fairly short order we'd be the number 1 casino downtown with a couple of simple approaches.

1. Craps - best odds, best tables, and best dealers in the city.
2. Blackjack - card counters welcome - hand dealt games - as for odds/table limits, your first bet is your biggest bet.
3. Slots - highest pay-back in town - every machine has the same payout percentage.
4. Comps - all casino coupons welcome - their coupon is our coupon.

Other angles - an Asian wing for players who like Pai Gow, Sic Bo, Baccarat, Majhong, Roulette. A Party Pit for the younger crowd with loud music, dancers, low limit games, and scantily clad dealerettes. A large, secure, and well supervised arcade for the children of guests. The list goes on . . .

I'd go for the annuity option. No point in giving the government 500 million dollars. Prize is 1.3 bil and you get 800 mil? That's a 500 mil difference. Take it! Even though it would take 30 years, you'd be getting millions a year! That's a lot of money coming in for not lifting a finger. Well.. you would have to fill out the deposit slip.

As for what I would do? Put it all in trusts and say 'NO' to everyone who comes to me and asks for money. I would dispense it to family and charitable causes at my own pace and choosing.

Would I still play craps? Hell yeah! But this time it would be at a table and time of my choosing. Bring on the neutral bounce table.
Previous results are not indicative of future performance.

Playing craps with such a fortune behind you would be interesting as the money would mean nothing.
