I'll jump to the easy answer right away, which is the less you expose yourself to the house edge the better off you have to be.
So I guess this is Jeopardy as I have given the answer before the question, which is this.....I know a lot of people, including myself, who like either $44 inside or $64 across. Probably because I/they feel as they have so many options to win as long as the seven doesn't show.
I'm wondering if I/they wouldn't be better of instead of $44 inside to playing a single $42 six or eight? The obvious answer is above, the less house risk you are exposed to the better, but in this case betting just one number gives me a better chance of not collecting anything at all where $44 inside might still lose money, but collect $14/$28 along the way.
The upside is I don't need four hits to make a profit, I just need one.
What are your thoughts, is one big bet better than four or six smaller ones assuming I'm willing to risk the $44/$42 every hand?
I was told before that if you had $100 to play blackjack (for example) and wanted to double your money you had a better chance of doing that by playing one hand for $100 than trying to grind your way up $5 at a time. Seems right to me, but I ain't real bright.

I've played the one number strategy a few times. Usually it just sits and doesn't hit. But a few times it has really paid. I once turned a single $12 eight into $175. (At the same time, a guy on the other end of the table turned $5000 into $95,000 with his across strategy). So your $42 eight would have become a grand or so. But I've found my need for action is too strong to spend most of my time waiting and watching others get paid, even if it means more volatility. I do still use this strategy at the beginning of a session though. That's when I have the most patience. If it hits right away I have a chance to get a nice score never risking more than a few bucks. If it hits all around it then I'll increase the pressure/risk by placing more numbers.

For me, I like one or two larger bets instead of multiple smaller ones unless my hand and previous hits has gone far enough to warrant some spread. I think you already have all of the right information in your post.
I think it comes down to personality and knowing well what your shot will usually produce with different sets and especially your two primary sets. Because of variance, there definitely will be times when my two bets are not getting any winners but overall it works for me and that is what I have to remember in the heat of the moment. For me personally, I hate it more when I have already had three or even four hits and I am just breaking even on my initial exposure on the table. That is really depressing for me and makes me think too much. I just want to get a couple of hits and feel like I am now in the comfortable "making money" mode. Of course, I could just get better about regressing my bets and probably accomplish about the same thing. Like I said---different personalities!

If your place bets are not paying there rent take them down or regress to minimum on them !
