buying the 5 and 9
Can someone explain why more people dont buy the 5 and 9 when betting more than $40 and casino collects vig on winning bets only? the math bears out the advantage unless my math is off. Not entire impossible!
I dont recall seeing anyone buying anything except the 4 n 10.
thanks,

Yes, it is better if casino takes the vig on wins only.
I think in MS they automatically buy the 5 & 9 for you charging vig on win only but others will need to chime in about at what level this happens at.

Re: buying the 5 and 9
For Place-bets greater than $35 on the 5 or 9; buying the wager does offer a lower house-advantage (HA)...even in a vig-up-front house.
However, in some stores where buying the 5 or 9 isn't common; dealers often get frustrated and testy when someone insists on buying those wagers.
If you are a strong "game-flow" proponent; then buying the 5 or 9 in a house that isn't overly conversant in doing it, will often slow the game-pace down because of protracted payout-calculation interruptions (where a dealer has to check with the box several times to ensure that a correct Buy-5 or Buy-9 payout is being made...not to mention the vig-breakage discussion that takes place nearly everytime a new Buy-5/Buy-9 bet gets made in a vig-up-front house).

If it is a joint with 10x or higher odds a put bet accomplishes the same result with fewer Tylenol moments. If you do put bets at that high a level do it in amounts like $5.00 with $40.00 odds. Doing things like $36.00 odds will not make any friends with the dealers.
The only craps player I ever saw 86'ed was tossed for making odd bets like a $78.00 six and then talking inexperienced dealers into paying too much if it hit. That and he used too many 4 letter words when he was losing.

thanks a lot fellow di's. i was just thinking that it would be a cheap way to toke the dealers everytime the buy 5/9 hits just throw the vig differential on a two way hard way and everyone should be happy even with the extra mental gymnastics.

Re: buying the 5 and 9
Even in markets like Tunica where the five and nine are automatically "bought" at certain levels - I forget and toss out my old standard bets. That's because I have specific progressions I run and when the amount of the bet and payoff changes it screws ME up - not the dealers. But you are correct. The buy bet makes sense at certain levels. I just take the path of least resistance.

Yeah, H I've seen you do that even when I'd reminded you before the trip.

Even on a $20 bet, buying saves you $1, right? I think a lot of people just don't like to bother with it. If the house makes the dealers flag the bet with a buy button they certainly aren't going to encourage it.
