Question about PL CO insurance

I'm new to the forum and have only been on the DI journey for 2 years. In my 30+ years of the game however, I NEVER
placed any bets in the middle of the table always only playing the PL with odds after a point, and then placing box numbers only. I never even play HW. So now that I'm becoming proficient with the straight sixes, I produce a lot of horns If I were to throw $3 down and tell the dealer to put $1 each on a horn 2,3 and 12
I assume if a 12 hits, they will pay me $28 cause the 12 did not lose and it would have paid me $30 for $1.
But the 2, and 3 lost so they subtract the $2 from the $30 and give me $28 -so they can replace the $1 each back on the 2 and 3? That was my first question is $28 payout correct on the 2 or 12. (or $13 if a 3 hits)?
Next question:
Suppose I instead say I want a $3 any craps? How does that pay if a 2, 3 or 12 hits? Is it the same? If not, then isn't it better to play it in the horn area?
In my next live trip (end of September), I want to start playing these bets with my newly acquired results from BT,
recording over 2000 rolls from 2 finger pincer grip, 9 feet out, and LH overhand parr/gtc style toss.

That's a "three way crap." It pays $30 for $1 on the 2 and 12 in most casinos. The 3 craps pays the same as a Yo - $15 for $1. You've hit on the reason I play a World bet on the come out. I set the straight sixes and toss a lot of horn numbers -but I'll also double pitch into a seven sometimes. The World bet gives you a $1 on the Big Red in addition to the Horn bet. It's a terrible bet mathematically - unless you can hit it.

If you are at a house that pays triple the field on the 12, then you can also bet there instead. I think such a field bet on the c/o is called the Mississippi crap check. Less house edge, covers more numbers, but even if the 2 or 12 does hit your payment won't be a bumper one relative to stake.
