Hedging the ATS

Setting and influencing the dice roll is just part of the picture. To beat the dice you have to know how to bet the dice. Whether you call it a "system," a "strategy," or just a way to play - this is the place to discuss it.

Hedging the ATS

Post by Lax26 »

Does anyone have the break down or most efficient way to hedge the last number on the ATS? I like to have seemless plan for when the situation occurs. Let’s run the scenario: $5 $5 $5
I’ve hit the the Tall and need the 4 for everything. (I scribbled these numbers while driving home from work so there’s no way that they’re right) soooo someone please straighten me out !!! Total outstanding winnings would be $900
Lay the 4 for $450 + $12 vig equals a $225 win if the seven shows or $900 - $462 =$438.00 if I hit the 4.

If the final # is a 5:
Lay the 5 for $450 +$15 vig equals a $300 win if the seven shows or $900 - $465 =$435.00 if I hit the 5.

If the final # is a 6:
Lay the 6 for $450 +$18 vig equals a $360 win if the seven shows or $900 - $468 =$432.00 if I hit the 6.

I have never made this play, I usually coaster chart and bone track the shit outta this scenario but since this site is led by and contributed from the best of the best, hit me with the proper play or adjustments in the lay amounts

Last trip to the Beau Rivage I had $5 on the ATS and rolled it; I now went $25 on the small and $25 on the ATS. I had already hit the big first when i had no money on it but once it hit I had put $15 on it. Now I found myself needing just the 8 to make the ATS again.
I was so focused on shooting that I just laid the 8 for $600 instead of $2400 and bombed out.
Your math is correct; like one dealer says always take the free money and Lay.

That sounds like one heck of a session!

Thx Kumar for the Beau Rivage story. Interesting approach on that ATS and hedge. It sounds like you had some good wins on the Tall,Small, and ATS.

Personally Im not in favor of hedging ATS(or anything) where we have the advantage (or disadvantage). Even if one is at a disadvantage hedging typically wont result in a NET+ vs not hedging.

Of course, if one does it for bankroll preservation it sometimes may assist us in not busting/ thus by preserving that buyin one may eventually recover.
"IF" I was going to hedge I would be more inclined to do so in a scenario where maybe a DP or DC had traveled to an Even number. I "might" temporarily hedge with a Hardway until I felt the dice had moved away from that number. Then remove the Hardway. Even then I would only temporarily use the Hardway for "part" of the DP or DC. Even with my "temporary and partial" approach I know I wont be net+ in the long run.

*Just my personal opinion and approach on hedges.

I do not play the Fire, T,S, or ATS. About 20 years ago I would very occasionally play the Fire Bet. I tossed the 5-Pt Fire, and after collecting the payout thought: "this is a good time to NEVER play bonus bets again". I have not.
I had been tracking all the various bonus bets such as Fire,ATS,..etc. I discovered (for me personally) they were Net- so when they did hit my NET simply approached -0- from the underside once again. Too much distraction and dilution of my buyin.
Others mileage may vary.

I think its good that you have a plan, so you don't need to improvise on the fly - that's too many mental gymnastics for most shooters to handle.

I seldom hedge the ATS, perhaps I'm over confident, or wary of the negative energy; or my rationalizing usually comes down to I have 2-3 sets on my crib sheet for the number I need, let's have the set do the work (with the provision that I was getting good dice behavior and the expected numbers).

In fairness though, if I'm above $15/side then I'd probably lay a small amount, esp cause I could pull it later.

BTW when I'm shooting and on the ATS, I ALWAYS have the crew on it too, as that really amps up the energy, DN8R

I never hedge on myself, rarely on anyone for most of the same reasons Nate mentioned. I also feel that if i liked the bet when i needed 10 numbers i love it when i only need one. I have also already won my bet back many times by hitting half.
