Hey guys
Do any of you consider don't betting yourself when your shot is off or if the table is cold? For guys that do, how do you approach it? For example, do you still set for your points? Or use a diff strategy? Or not play at all?

Occasionally, when I'm on an empty or near-empty table, I will deliberately shoot from the Don'ts. I think it's a smart way to play. If my shot is off and I can't put anything together then I'll just pass the dice most of the time and work it out on the practice rig later. Of course, the problem may not be your shot so much as it is the fact that you are subject to the same variance inherent in the game as everybody else. Sometimes you win. Sometimes you lose. But if you're a DI with decent skills and you are betting your hands correctly you should win more than you lose over the long haul. And now that I've gotten that out of my system, I'll tell you a story.
Right after M Resort opened on the outskirts of Vegas a group of us went out there to play. I was at SL1 and went PSO three times in a row. My queue to stop shooting. When the dice came back to me I told the stick I was passing the dice. There was no one else on my end of the table and the boxman looked at me and said "You know what your problem is - you need to be shooting from straight out. Give that a try." The other players at the table encouraged me to do so, so I moved to straight out and one of the other guys took stick left. Dice came tome and I tossed something like a 28 number hand. The boxman was nodding the whole time, telling me "I told you so." The cool part about this was not only did I have a good hand, the "shift" of players to different positions on the table benefited everybody. Virtually everyone had a good hand and the table completely turned around.

I've never shot well at M...the tables seem hard but the dice have so much life once they hit down...but that's just my opinion. Anyways, how do you determine if its your shot or just variance?

Excellent question. The short answer is I don't know. The longer answer would say something about backing up and taking a long run view and just accepting it. This is one of those things I wish I had time to graph out in Excel using around 5000 rolls as a base. Maybe Maddog will come to my rescue on this some day. Of course, I think he's even busier than I am. Seems like time is the one thing none of us have enough of.

I've had some fairly substantial wins at M. And some crazy times shooting there. I recall one session where Beau and I were standing straight out and I was just quick setting the dice to make sure I was not on the hardway set and blasting them down the table. Tossed a hand that stretched way up there - I think into the low 30's. Had my four and ten pressed up - $1000 on one and $500 on the other, plus $250 or so on the nine (as I recall). Got a complaint from the box that I was throwing the dice too hard. She asked if I could tone it down a bit. I said sure, turned my bets off, and lobbed a perfect double pitch seven. You could tell that she was pleased with herself for the misdirection. I, on the other hand, took down the $1750 on the table and headed for the cage - please that I had had the foresight to turn the bets off.

I really do hope you come out of your hiatus and do some seminars in Vegas buddy! I would love to start posting some stories about playing with the big boys. Even better if the stories involve some victory drinks after!

I just could never bring myself to bet the Don't while I was shooting.....just couldn't do it. 
I believe three times with the dice and if nothing happens its time to walk.
The exception to this is when I go out on the boat and I am locked on board for five hours. Then it depends how crowded the table is, some days it could take an hour or so for the dice to come around with a crowd. In this case three times with the dice and its almost time to head back to port.
If the dice come around quickly then three times with the dice and I will take a walk around the little boat and maybe go up to the top deck for some fresh air and Florida sunshine. Then back to the tables again.
A little break and some deep down Dice soul searching will do a body and mind a lot of good. If things don't turn around when I arrive back at the table I think of all the money I saved while on this break.
During the course of a regular game I bet the Don't whenever the table tells me to.
We all should learn both sides of this game we love. I don't mind people betting the Don't while I am shooting, its there money.
We also should learn at least one other casino game especially when our shot decided to stay home the day we decided to visit the casino.
I play blackjack, counting using the Hi Low and of course basic strategy. I also play VP, Jacks is the only game I have learned the strategy for, VP is sort of boring.

I tend to agree with you on playing the dark side as it tends to mess with my mind.
There just happens to be an article on the Dice Coach website about switching to the dark side when things just are not working. I am sure Heavy will not mind if I post the link here,

We have all had those sessions where we have back to back 30 plus roll hands, then the next day its PSO, PSO,PSO, etc. If we are to really become complete DI players, the tables will not always be our best friends and we most likely need to incorporate Dark Side into our play.
I for one do know that I need to really spend some time on dark side play and maybe the answer is take one day a week and just do dark side.
Hey, that might be a great topic for the 2012 Axis Power Seminars ( hint, hint ).
Just food for thought. Hey, that reminds me, where is that leftover stuffing and gravy. Hmmm, wifes just stepped out, almost time for football, kids still sleeping ( hungover ). Hells bells, new diet starts Monday.
