Dewey Don't Question

Setting and influencing the dice roll is just part of the picture. To beat the dice you have to know how to bet the dice. Whether you call it a "system," a "strategy," or just a way to play - this is the place to discuss it.

Dewey Don't Question

Post by rhythm roller » Tue Mar 17, 2015 8:32 pm

Hi Folks!

Think Heavy and others have suggested possibly playing a Dewey Don't hedge to virtually reduce a table minimum to a lower denomination more comfortable and more in line with a persons usual level of play.

This is something I might try out on my upcoming trip as I usually find the best tables are at high minimums in most of the casinos on the strip.

Since I have never done this before I have a simple question regarding this play. Say if the table is a $50 minimum then do I need to make a Do and a Don't at least at this table minimum to play? I know that at least one side of the bet would need to be table minimum or greater but not sure if both sides need to be at table minimum.

Thanks!

I'll take a stab...I play this at times....You do this to protect each side....So therefore if the do is $50 then the don't is also to hedge. The only way to lose is a 12. SO I would throw a 2 buck 12 at the dealer on comeout....50 bucks is quite a bit to lose on a craps number....

You can add odds to each side if you wish....Just remember the lays pay a lot less. Good Luck

For the most part, the only time I play the doey don't is when I'm at a high limit table - say $100 - and I want to play a low limit table - say $10. Play $110 on the Don'ts and $100 on the Do's. Now you have a $10 game - as long as the 12 doesn't show.

Or play a $25 DP and put your wife at the other end of the table playing a $25 Pass line wager. Both are getting comps and the wins or losses are cut in half.

Thanks everyone!

Comeout7, Good info about tossing out the $2 12 for protection. As long as I am running a hedge I might as well add the protection to the mix.

Snakeeyes, Don't care much about the comp side of it. Am content to just get what I get and not let that affect my game. Of course more comp is better though. Certainly don't want any heat but I think that might be casino or even box man dependent. On the other hand if the casino doesn't like what I am doing and it is not illegal then maybe I am doing something right! ;) Very good idea about the team play and I will try that if I have someone playing with me. Thanks!

Heavy and Dylan, thanks for your answers as your thoughts are always appreciated when I have a question.

I have never really played any hedge before but I think I will try this to ease myself onto a $50 table at times this trip. I do have the bankroll but not sure if I am emotionally ready for it. I know I can play a lesser table like it is a $50 but then I miss the chance to be at a very empty table with more shooting chances. Hopefully hedging a few times will get me in the comfort zone. Thanks!

The place bets will still be $54 on 6 or 8...... Were you just planning a strategy that is just $50+ odds?

Good question Bry,

I should have explained that as well. No, I usually play the 6 and 8 starting at $42 each so the stretch to $54 or even $60 will not seem like too much for me. They often quickly get to that $60 level anyway. And as I said I do have the bankroll for it.

The Pass line is the emotional thing for me and in my normal game I always start it at table minimum and work odds up before I go to a higher PassLine. Now I know my pass line emotions about a higher table minimum are silly and especially when the pass line and odds are very good bets mathematically but emotions are what they are for each of us and if I don't pay attention to them and try to tame them then I will just mess up my toss and the rest of my game thinking about it. Or at least that is my feeling about it.

Here's some input from our recent experience with this at Harrahs Cherokee. Every casino may have different rules.

The only table we could find was a $25 table. L and I were playing side by side. When I rolled I made a $25 PL bet. L made a $25 DP bet. When she rolled I made a $25 DP bet and she bet $25 on the PL. Once the point was set the shooter would add $10 odds to the PL bet. Once we set the point we only had $10 at risk. On some rolls we would also make a Come and Don't Come bet for $25 each. When that traveled we'd place $10 odds on the come bet, not the DC. We had three rolls each. Several PSOs and one really nice hand. We only got paid on two points on the nice hand. None of our come bets ever came back. We got a 12 on the come out once. We don't hedge because on a $25 game the minimum prop bet is $5. No $1 bets allowed. After six hands we lost $39. $25 of that was the one CO 12. It never leaves us feeling very "craps satisified" after a session like this because it is such a compromise from the way we prefer to play. However, it does provide a way to scratch the craps itch and get a feel for our shot without risking any more than we normally would.

The last time we played it was early morning and the table had been empty for a while. W played PL/DP with $10 odds and also put up a $30 6&8 for three rolls. We reasoned that we would have $66 inside on a $15 table so $60 on the 6&8 plus $10 odds was about the same sevens exposure. We lost $70 on my hand but got two hits on L's next hand and then took the 6&8 down. So we about broke even since we only hit one point. During L's roll the casino did the unimaginable...they changed it from a $25 to a $10 table per our earlier request. This is the only time I have ever seen a table limit go DOWN during a session. They announced it was a $10 game after this shooter but actually allowed L to go back up with a $10 PL bet after she hit her first point at the $25 level. Of course we quickly were joined by 3 other players. But I'd rather have a $10 table with 5 players than a $25 table to ourselves.

Thanks Freak,

Nice little time capsule of data for me to think about and a great story to boot! :)

The first couple of times I play a $50 I would be happy with break even or a small win or loss just to get my feet wet. Unlike you, I would prefer the $25 table by myself to the $10 with other people. I just don't like to bet much on random rollers. I prefer the wins and even losses to be accountable to only me.

Here is a story for you too along the same lines as yours. Went to the Bellagio one night just when all the tables were opening. Walked up to a table where I knew the crew well and enjoyed them personally and professionally. When I went to put my money down I saw that it was a $25 table and because my toss had not been top drawer earlier in the day I decided I would not play any table greater than $15 the rest of the day. Well I said oh too bad this is a $25 as I would enjoy playing here but I just don't have the funds for it tonight. I was the first player to that table and the stickman looked at the box man who flipped the sign to $15. I layed my cash on the table and within 15 seconds the sign was back at $25 with me grandfathered in at $15! Best of both worlds! Only a couple other players wanted to play $25 and I was in at $15 with lots of chances to shoot and the dealers made tips every time I shot. Very Nice!

Nice. Good for you! Aria and NYNY both lowered the limits for us but that was before we ever started to play. Basically, we'll play IF you take it to $10. (At NYNY we asked for $5 as nobody was playing at 6AM). It definitely never hurts to ask. The first time we played Aria we played $15 by ourselves, rolled well but bet timidly as we needed our $600 to last all day. After that day we would just walk up to any empty table and asked for the limit we wanted. Some said no but NYNY said yes once and Aria said yes on four different days. We never got other players so don't know how the "grandfathering" would have played out.

Thanks six shooter!

If Obie plays that way then Dewey Don't can't be all that bad! ;) :D

Yeah some casinos can really sweat over even small wins and maybe Obie's aren't that small.

Think that is one of the most fascinating things about Craps is that you can walk up to a table with 12 people playing and every one of them will be playing differently. Lots of times I just enjoy watching the game instead of playing and that doesn't cost me a dime.
