a bet i've never seen before.

I think this is the proper forum to post this in.

I was playing in a Quebec casino, $10 min, and I heard the dealer say "toss me a dollar, if you want to buy the 10 (the point)".
I see the dollar get tossed in and didn't think much of it. But then I looked at the 10 and only saw a $10 and $15 bet, with no buy button.
I look at the other box numbers in case i misheard the number and saw no buy button or any bets that would warrant a buy of the 5/9.
But then I noticed the player had his $10 bet (with the buy button on top), on the actual bottom line of the pass line area, half way between where a pass line bet and a free odds bet would be.
This happen 2 other occasions (one where the point was again a 10 and another when it was a 6) and when the point was made the player would get paid the same as a place bet, accept in order with the other pass line betters.

I am assuming this is a courtesy bet, like placing a bet on the line between 2nd and 3rd dozen in roulette?
It was not a full table, so it would not slow the game down, so I was curious why they were made.
Is this a standard bet that can be made at all casinos but just not usually implemented?

Thanks

I know in Tunica if you don't have money on the pass line you can place the point number by putting your chip on the outside line of the pass line.

Hi Stoic,

As C75 said, it's a self-serve way of Place-betting the PL-Point.

Instead of the dealer having to position the wager in the appropriate Place-bet box; the self-serve method for Place-betting the current PL-Point, is to position your properly-sized wager on the bottom of the Passline's bottom white line (between where Passline wager and your PL-Odds would go).

It's an old-school method, so if a dealer hasn't heard about it; they ain't been around for as long as they think they have. ;)

So if the point was 6 or 8 the correct wager would be $6 (12,18,etc) on the line with a $7 payout?

You are correct.
