7 Things I Wish They'd Told Me BEFORE I Discovered Craps

Post by heavy » Sun Sep 30, 2018 3:32 pm

I thought I'd crank up a little "FUN" thread this morning and see if we could come up with a BUNCH of ideas, then narrow it down to a list of just SEVEN things you WISH you'd been told before you ever played your first craps session. Maybe it's something to do with etiquette or Field betting or taking odds or not come betting or play8ing the dark side or . . . well, you tell us? After all. You don't build a forum for the smartest craps players on earth and not listen to what they have to say. Guys? Give us your top . . . as many as you can come up with.

1. Even variance will cause a loss for the best shooter at some time.

1. It's the daddy of all casino games. What the fuck else was I playing between 1988 and 2013?
2. The first time you play you will win, you will probably win big and you will become hooked.
3. Not all bets on the felt are created equal.
4. The game is a grumpy old man magnet.
5. You can lose your arse much more easily than win that down payment on your next Rolls Royce
6. Cocktail waitresses are unlucky.
7. Apparently with dice setting and controlled throwing you may just get an edge over the game.

1. Get your late bets in early.
2. Dealer bets are for good service - but sometimes you have to pay it forward.
3. If it feels like it's taking you too long to get the dice set and away - just throw them off the table then start over.
4. Turn my bets off.
5. Bring my bets down.
6. Sevens hop.
7. Never say seven at the table.

1. Dice Influence (DI) is the option of play
2. Understand volatility and variance
3. Have Stop-loss limits
4. The casino will be open tomorrow. Accept the occasional loss. You can always retreat to play and fight another day.
5. You don't have to bet on every shooter. Understand how to manage a bankroll.
6. The mathematical progressions of pressing your bets is a sight to behold
7. Know your signature numbers and bet them

Ok..I'll go along with this.
1. If a guy dies at the table and falls under it, do not step on him while shooting.
2. Always tip the cocktail girl even if you just want water.
3. Always play a buck or two for dealers even if you are treading water.
4 Use the 15 minute rule. If you are losing walk away for 15
minutes. Go out to your car or at least outside, stay there and pretend
you just arrived and are starting a new day. Then go back in and kill it.
5. Be kind. Be generous. I could have said be mean and nasty. You pick
which one will do better for you.
6. The money you win is now YOUR money. It is not the casino's money re:
"I can up my bets because it's the casino's money." No. You are upping
bets with YOUR money. That money would buy you gas, food, fun.

7. If you love craps that much, maybe sell your house and move to where you can play
within 15 minutes. A two or three hour drive home when you lose can be
depressing. I haven't done this yet. But then again I've gotten clear about what DI means. It means I will win again and more than I've lost.

1. Always bet on a female, when it is her first time shooting.
2. Always bet on a hot female...regardless.
3. Never play the Pass Line, unless shooting.
4. Tipping the dealer does pay off.
5. Don't play when in a bad mood or on tilt.
6. Don;t fist pump when playing the Don't(I have never done this but have seen it done)
7. Play your system, even if it annoys the dealers.

(1) Craps allows a player a choice Bet or Observe.

(2) A player may choose to wager With OR Against a Box Number repeating...
.
(3) Craps is a game a player could perceive Trends or cycles....
.
(4) At moments
On a Come Out Roll ( facing Come Out 7 or Yo Eleven )
Laying against an established number becomes less expensive
than the Don't Pass / Don't Come wager...............
.
(5) Stay aware for Tells/indicators
which fingerprint
specifics shown by some shooters..
.
(6) When a player chooses to wager against THE Dice
the wager IS NOT AGAINST YOU...
.
(7) Play clearly focused by staying emotionally uninvolved.

No redheads at the table while Heavy is shooting. They may be too distracting for him. But it's okay if he's shooting blindfolded.

(1) Rules may change from casino to casino, at same casino between shifts, or even at same casino between different box people and crews at different tables. The only real rule that is consistent everywhere is hit the back wall with both dice.

(2) the casinos always make the rules and players need to abide by them or go somewhere else to play. We are guests in their house.

(3) Learn the math of the game. The math is the game.

But it's okay if he's shooting blindfolded.
I only do that at the dealer school during the "No Sevens" competition in order to make the contest fair for all.

Just say NO to the Stick's area bets and the large table area bets.

DO NOT bet on the chicken feeders and EVERY person that rolls the dice.

Protect, manage and bet within your BR.

Accept the small Wins as well as the big Wins (have a Win goal and secure it).

Learn the game COMPLETELY, before putting down your money.

Have a game plan, a backup plan AND a Stop Loss.

Don't argue with the Box/Stick. You'll never win the argument and likely to turn them against you. Just keep your mouth shut.

(I DO believe just about everyone here on this Forum, told me these things BEFORE I went to the table BUT, I just HAD to try to defy the wisdom. Lessons quickly learned and corrected...)

1. Learn the rules BEFORE you go to the casino. Don't bother the other players asking them questions.
2. When buying in, put your money on the table when the puck is OFF. Never buy in when the puck is ON!
3. Never, ever say the word "seven" at the table.
4. Get your bets in early - not when the dice are being passed to the shooter.
5. Keep your hands behind the rail. The shooter and other players won't be happy with you if the dice hit your hands. (Especially if the number you are not allowed to say comes up!)
6. Don't bother the people standing beside you asking them questions or how they play. They have a strategy, you need to figure out your own strategy.
7. Tips are appreciated by the crew. Put $1.00 on the Pass Line or Don't when you shoot. At the very least, tip the crew when you color up.
8. Along with learning the rules (Item # 1) also learn the superstitions that many Craps players follow.

I agree with BD, never bet on Heavy when there is a Ginger alert at the table. But in all seriousness (are any of us really serious?), the one thing I would tell my younger self when I first stumbled on craps was:

Do not get so enthusiastic about the camaraderie at the table that you forget whether you are ahead or behind. And if you are behind, how much? Is it "too much?" You don't know the answer to these questions? Don't play.

Last night it was late hardway bets guarantee a seven on the next roll. It was so bad last night that one of the dealers even asked the guy if he was ever going to figure it out.

Yeah..if a dealer says "Let me know when you figure it out "and you are in the middle of a big roll with nothing on the table but your PL and maybe a 6 and 8 which you aren't pressing.. running scared and unsure of yourself..He doesn't mean "tell me how to figure out the game of craps." He means..make some freakin bets you idiot. Happened to me long ago.
